Medallion Parking Garage

The original Medallion Garage was built in the 1920’s in the 100 block
of Adams Avenue to provide, in part, parking for the Hotel Casey, which
was at the time, a centerpiece of downtown Scranton. On the façade of
the garage were eighteen glazed architectural terra cotta medallions which depicted historic motor vehicles, in five different designs. They included:
(1) a school bus with five children and a driver, (2) a race car with driver, (3) a family sedan with a driver and two passengers, (4) a work truck and crew, and (5) a motorcycle with driver and passenger. Due to deteriorating condition, the garage closed in 2002. In 2003, it
was determined that it would be too costly to repair the garage and in 2005,
the garage, along with an adjacent building, was torn down to
make way for a new 510-space, seven-level (including rooftop) parking garage. This new garage is also known as the Medallion Garage because the terra cotta medallions have been restored and placed on the façade
of the facility. |
